Aang Earthbend (Bracket 3)
Primer
# Aang, at the Crossroads โ Earthbend Primer (Bracket 3) ### "It's earth. You're supposed to face it head-on." **Budget:** ~$63 out of pocket โ 78 of 100 copies were already in the collection. The buy list is mostly Avatar: The Last Airbender singles under $2; the only double-digit buys are Avatar Kyoshi, Earthbender ($16) and Aesi, Tyrant of Gyre Strait ($10). Total deck value ~$307. Prices from the deckbuilding database, August 2026. **Bracket:** 3 (Upgraded). Two Game Changers โ Fierce Guardianship and Farewell โ under the limit of three. No mass land denial, no chained extra turns, no two-card infinites, one tutor (Eladamri's Call). --- ## What This Deck Does Aang, at the Crossroads is a Bant commander with two lives. The front face is a 3/3 flier that digs five cards deep on entry and puts a creature with mana value 4 or less straight onto the battlefield โ eighteen of the deck's twenty-four creatures are legal hits, so he almost never whiffs. Then, **when another creature you control leaves the battlefield, he transforms** at the next upkeep into Aang, Destined Savior: a 4/4 flier that **earthbends 2 every combat** and grants your land creatures vigilance. Earthbend N animates one of your lands as a 0/0 creature with haste and puts N +1/+1 counters on it โ and when that land dies or is exiled, **it returns to the battlefield tapped**. That return clause is the engine the whole deck runs on. Your threats are your manabase: they attack, they block, they die profitably, and they always come back. Meanwhile every +1/+1 counter synergy in the 99 (Hardened Scales, Solid Ground, Conclave Mentor, Kalonian Hydra) makes each earthbend bigger, and every landfall payoff (Scute Swarm, Felidar Retreat, Lotus Cobra, Tireless Provisioner/Tracker) triggers again each time a land comes back or gets fetched. ## Flipping Aang Don't overthink it โ the deck flips him almost by accident. Any of these works: an earthbent land chump-blocks and dies (it returns tapped afterward โ pure profit), Ephemerate blinks any creature, Solemn Simulacrum dies, you sacrifice an earthbent Evolving Wilds or Terramorphic Expanse (fetch a land AND flip Aang AND the land returns), or Cycle of Renewal sacrifices an animated land for two basics. The transform is one-way โ he stays the Destined Savior until he leaves the battlefield โ so once he flips, the earthbending never stops. ## How to Play It **Early (turns 1โ3):** Ramp. Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Nature's Lore, Farseek, Growth Spiral, Cultivate, Kodama's Reach. Mystic Remora on turn one is the best draw engine in the deck. Land a cheap counters piece (Hardened Scales, Conclave Mentor) or an early Ally (Haru, Toph, Katara). **Mid (turns 4โ6):** Cast Aang, snap off his dig, then flip him. Every combat now earthbends 2 โ and **Katara, the Fearless doubles that trigger** (Aang, Destined Savior is an Ally), along with Haru's, Bumi's, and The Earth King's. Vigilance from Aang is quietly the deck's best line of text: attack with your land creatures, deal damage, and they're STILL untapped to pay for Fierce Guardianship or Inspiring Call. Kodama of the West Tree gives every counter-carrying land trample and fetches you a basic each time one connects. **Late (turn 7+):** Avatar Kyoshi earthbends 8 and untaps that land every combat โ a recurring 8/8+ haste attacker that board wipes can't keep down. The Legend of Kyoshi draws cards equal to your biggest creature (often 6+), earthbends your whole hand size, then flips into a mana engine. The Earth King's attack trigger with any power-4 attacker โ including a pumped land โ fetches multiple basics at once, which Scute Swarm and Felidar Retreat convert into a board. **Mulligans:** Keep hands with 3+ lands and either a ramp spell or Mystic Remora. You want to hit your fifth land on time for Aang plus protection. Hands full of payoffs with two lands are traps โ this deck is 37 lands plus 12 ramp effects for a reason. ## How You Actually Win **Plan A โ The land army.** Earthbend every turn, double it with Katara, grow it with Hardened Scales/Conclave Mentor/Solid Ground, double everything with Kalonian Hydra's attack trigger (lands with counters get doubled too), and swing wide with vigilance and trample. Sylvan Awakening turns EVERY land into an indestructible attacker for one alpha strike โ with Bumi, Eclectic Earthbender's attack trigger putting two counters on each of them first. **Plan B โ Secret Tunnel.** It can't be blocked, and it's a land, so removal barely touches it (it comes back if it was earthbent when it died). A Secret Tunnel with 10+ counters ends someone in two swings. Gavony Township pumps it every turn. **Plan C โ Value attrition.** Aesi, Tatyova, Tireless Tracker, Armorcraft Judge, and Return of the Wildspeaker bury the table in cards. Farewell and Avatar's Wrath are your resets โ and both are nearly one-sided: earthbent lands that get destroyed OR exiled just return tapped, so wipe the board and keep your army. ## Rules Notes Worth Knowing - Earthbent lands are still lands: tap them for mana, and with vigilance they do both jobs in one turn. - The earthbend return works from exile as well as the graveyard โ Farewell set to exile creatures does not exile your animated lands permanently. - Counters do NOT survive the return trip; the land comes back as a plain tapped land. Re-earthbend it later (you can target already-animated lands, too). - Rishkar, Peema Renegade makes every counter-carrying permanent tap for {G} โ including your earthbent lands, which effectively tap for two. - Forgotten Ancient can move its hoard of counters onto any creatures at your upkeep โ including animated lands right before combat. ## Inventory Notes (what was bought and why) The collection covered the whole support shell โ ramp, removal, counterspells, the counters package (Kalonian Hydra, Forgotten Ancient, Managorger Hydra, Rishkar), landfall payoffs (Scute Swarm, Avenger of Zendikar), and 22 of 37 lands including Boseiju, Who Endures and Gavony Township. The ~$63 buy list is almost entirely the Avatar-set earthbend core that nothing else can imitate: Bumi, Haru, The Earth King, Ba Sing Se, The Legend of Kyoshi, Earthbender Ascension, Solid Ground, the earthbend removal suite, plus four generic staples (Aesi, Tatyova Steward, Provisioner, Tracker, Nature's Lore, Eternal Witness โ all under $11). Cut for price, not power: Badgermole Cub ($53!), Toph, Earthbending Master ($39), Bristly Bill ($39), Earthbending Student ($25), Branching Evolution, Earthshape, and Ozolith, the Shattered Spire. If any of those come down โ or show up in a trade binder โ Toph, Earthbending Master and Bristly Bill are the first two cards back in (cut Armorcraft Judge and Inscription of Abundance). Note: the deck's copies of Lotus Cobra, Hardened Scales, and Mystic Remora are currently allocated to other built decks in the collection โ shuffle them over or budget an extra ~$8. ## Upgrade Path (toward Bracket 4) Rhystic Study fills the third Game Changer slot. Oracle of Mul Daya, Crucible of Worlds, and the pricier Toph cards push the lands theme harder. Cyclonic Rift if the meta calls for it. But as built, this deck holds its own in any bracket 3 pod โ and nobody at the table expects lethal damage from a city. *"That's how you earthbend. You have to be rooted โ like a rock."*
