Pearl-Ear Voltron
Primer
# Pearl-Ear, Imperial Advisor β Budget Voltron Primer ### "The fox knows many things; this one knows exactly one: twenty-one damage." **Budget:** ~$36 out of pocket β 75 of 100 copies were already in the collection, and every buy is a card the inventory couldn't replicate. Total deck value ~$214. Prices from Scryfall, August 2026. --- ## What This Deck Does Pearl-Ear, Imperial Advisor is a three-mana 3/4 lifelink Fox with two lines of text that turn a pile of cheap Auras into an engine: > *Enchantment spells you cast have affinity for Auras.* > *Whenever you cast an Aura spell that targets a modified permanent you control, draw a card.* "Modified" means equipped, enchanted by your Auras, or carrying counters. So the loop is: modify Pearl-Ear once β a Swiftfoot Boots, a counter from Rosie Cotton or Tyrite Sanctum, any Aura β and from then on **every Aura you point at him replaces itself**, while affinity makes each one cheaper than the last. A hand of one-mana Auras becomes a stack of free cantrips stapled to +1/+1 effects, and Pearl-Ear grows from a 3/4 into a lifelinking, first-striking monster that kills through **commander damage: 21 from him and any opponent is dead**, regardless of life total. The deck is three overlapping pieces: 1. **The Aura engine** β sixteen cheap Auras plus Sram, Kor Spiritdancer, and Mesa Enchantress, who all draw alongside Pearl-Ear's own trigger. 2. **A protection wall** β voltron's classic weakness is the 4-for-1 board wipe. Mother of Runes, Grand Abolisher, Bastion Protector, Teferi's Protection, Flawless Maneuver, Akroma's Will, Timely Ward, and totem-armor/return effects (Hyena Umbra, Gift of Immortality, Shielded by Faith) mean the suit rarely stays in the graveyard. 3. **Backup wearers** β when Pearl-Ear draws too much heat, the same wardrobe fits Danitha Capashen, Adeline, Kor Spiritdancer, Light-Paws, or Zetalpa, and the Equipment package (Helm of the Gods, All That Glitters' artifact half, Helm of the Host) modifies whoever is next in line. --- ## How to Play It **Early game (turns 1β3):** Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Knight of the White Orchid, and Weathered Wayfarer keep lands flowing. Pearl-Ear on turn three (or two, off a rock) is almost always right β he is the engine, not just the finisher. Sneak in a modification enabler first if you can: Skullclamp, a Boots, or Rosie Cotton, so the very first Aura you cast already draws. **Mid game (turns 4β6):** This is the draw-engine window. Sram, Spiritdancer, or Mesa Enchantress plus Pearl-Ear means each Aura draws two or more cards, and affinity often makes them cost {0}β{1}. Ethereal Armor, All That Glitters, and Helm of the Gods scale with everything you've played; Sage's Reverie refills your whole hand. Flickering Ward is the quiet all-star: {W} to cast, {W} to bounce it back to hand β every recast is another Pearl-Ear draw, another affinity discount, and another permanent pump for Ethereal Armor. Hold up Mother of Runes or Timely Ward (it has flash when targeting a commander, and grants indestructible) before you go all-in on the suit. **Closing (turn 6+):** A Pearl-Ear wearing three or four Auras is routinely 8β12 power with first strike, lifelink, flying, and double strike from Battle Mastery β 21 commander damage lands in two swings, often one. Rogue's Passage and Gryff's Boon guarantee the connection, Spirit Mantle (protection from creatures) makes him unblockable *and* unchumpable. Helm of the Host on the finished fox is one-player-per-combat becoming two. Sequence kills: remove the player with the most removal first. **Mulligan guide:** Keep two-plus lands with either Pearl-Ear castable on curve plus cheap Auras, or a draw engine (Sram/Spiritdancer) start. The dream: land, land, Sol Ring, Skullclamp, Ethereal Armor, Flickering Ward. --- ## How You Actually Win **Plan A β Commander damage.** Twenty-one from Pearl-Ear. With first strike from Ethereal Armor and protection backup, he attacks into almost anything. Every Aura both grows him and replaces itself, so the "voltron runs out of gas" failure mode mostly doesn't happen here. **Plan B β The second fox.** Light-Paws turns every Aura you cast into a tutor: fetch any cheaper-or-equal Aura from the library and it enters attached *to Light-Paws herself*. She assembles her own suit while you build Pearl-Ear's, and she's a fine 21-damage threat in her own right. (Note: the fetched Aura enters without being cast, so it doesn't trigger the draw engines β the cast one does.) **Plan C β The wardrobe changes bodies.** Danitha (first strike, vigilance, lifelink, and she discounts the Equipment) and Adeline (who multiplies into token attackers that Rosie Cotton converts into counters) wear everything well. Zetalpa is the removal-proof late-game wearer. Marshal's Anthem, Sevinne's Reclamation, Sun Titan, and Mantle of the Ancients rebuild after a wipe β Mantle especially can return the *entire* graveyard's worth of Auras and Equipment onto one creature at once. **Plan D β Attrition.** Palace Jailer makes you the monarch, Welcoming Vampire and Skullclamp grind cards, Hall of Heliod's Generosity recycles every enchantment forever, and Sentinel's Eyes escapes from the graveyard on its own. Few decks out-value this one in a long game. --- ## Inventory Notes (what was bought and why) The collection already covered the voltron chassis β Equipment, protection, ramp, removal, and lands. What it had almost none of was Auras (three total, all utility) and zero enchantress effects, so the ~$36 buy list is exactly that: the sixteen-Aura suite, Sram/Spiritdancer/Mesa Enchantress, Light-Paws, Danitha, Sun Titan, Open the Armory, Hall of Heliod's Generosity, and Pearl-Ear himself ($0.26). The two big-ticket buys are Hall ($11.80) and Mantle of the Ancients ($7.79) β cut both for a ~$16 build if desired. Retether ($18.91) and Sigarda's Aid ($17.16) were dropped during the build for busting the $50 cap; Sevinne's Reclamation and Heirloom Blade cover their roles from the collection. Two owned cards were deliberately **excluded** after checking their text: Sword of Truth and Justice grants *protection from white*, which would strip every white Aura off its wearer β actively harmful here (Helm of the Gods took its slot). And Norika Yamazaki only recurs enchantments when a Samurai or Warrior attacks alone, which this deck essentially never does (Fiend Hunter took hers). --- ## Piloting Tips Cast Auras at instant-speed pressure points where possible β in response to targeted removal, Shielded by Faith or Timely Ward (flash, on a commander) blanks the spell entirely, and Mother of Runes does it for {0}. Don't dump the whole hand into one creature against open blue mana; the draw engine means you can rebuild, but two creatures wearing two Auras each beats one wearing four into a Swords to Plowshares. Remember Gift of Immortality and Hyena Umbra mean a board wipe is often a *net positive* β your creature returns, and Mantle of the Ancients or Sevinne's Reclamation re-dresses it while everyone else rebuilds from zero. Cartouche of Solidarity's Servo token triggers Rosie Cotton, which puts a counter wherever you need a modification. And Skullclamp plus that same Servo is two cards for one mana whenever you're flooding. Twenty-one damage. One very well-dressed fox.
